Locals perched on a platform atop Wagner Butte. This platform was built after a 1910 forest fire which burned much of Ashland Creek's canyon and threatened the town of Ashland. It was replaced with a cupola-style building in 1923, which was in turn replaced in 1961 with a lookout tower. After falling into disuse as airplanes took over fire surveillance, the tower was intentionally burned down by smoke jumpers in 1972. All that remains at the sight are foundation piers, melted glass, an iron railing and an amazing view of the valley. (source: 100 Hikes in Southern Oregon by William L. Sullivan)
